31 Days, One Mission: Building Your Stoptober Vaping Game Plan

Every October, roughly two million smokers up and down the country give Stoptober a go. Some go cold turkey with a packet of Nicorette and sheer stubbornness. Others take the switching route — and for them, the difference between a successful October and a sneaky fag behind the shed usually comes down to preparation.
Here's the honest truth: most failed switches aren't down to willpower. They're down to bad kit, wrong nicotine strength, or running out of e-liquid on a Sunday night when the shops are shut. So let's build your game plan properly.
Step One: Pick a Device You'll Actually Use
The best vape is the one you reach for without thinking. For most smokers making the switch, that means something simple — a pod kit or a pen-style device. Forget the towering sub-ohm mods with screens and menus for now; that's like buying a race car before passing your test.
What matters:
- Mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw. If you smoked, your lungs are used to that cigarette-style pull. An MTL kit mimics it, whereas big cloudy devices feel alien and can put you off.
- Ease of use. Refillable pods or pre-filled? Both work. Refillables work out cheaper per ml; pre-filled pods are about as low-effort as it gets.
- Battery life. Look for something with at least 1,000mAh if you're a heavier smoker — nothing triggers a relapse faster than a dead battery at the pub.
Step Two: Get Your Nicotine Strength Right
This is where most people stumble. Too weak and you'll be craving like mad; too strong and you'll feel dizzy and sick. As a rough guide for freebase e-liquid:
- 20mg nic salts — if you smoked 20+ a day
- 10–20mg nic salts — for 10–20 a day
- 3–6mg freebase — if you were a light smoker or have already cut down
Nic salts deserve a special mention for October. They absorb faster and deliver a smoother hit at higher strengths, which makes them brilliant for fresh switchers fighting the first-week cravings. Our nic salts explainer covers the science if you want the full picture.
Step Three: Stock Up Before Day One
Don't be the person ordering e-liquid on day three and topping up the cravings with cigarettes while you wait for Royal Mail. Before Stoptober kicks off, get:
- Two or three bottles of e-liquid in flavours you actually like — not the flavour you think you should like
- Spare pods or coils, because they always die at the worst moment
- A spare charging cable — one for home, one for the bag
On flavours: don't feel obliged to start with tobacco. Plenty of switchers find fruit, menthol or dessert flavours help break the association with cigarettes entirely. Others find tobacco eases the transition. There's no wrong answer — buy a couple of each if you're unsure.
Step Four: Know Your Relapse Triggers
Ask any ex-smoker when they nearly cracked and you'll hear the same list:
- After meals. Have your vape charged and within arm's reach.
- The pub or the smoking area at work. Take your vape; the hand-to-mouth habit is half the battle, and vaping keeps that ritual alive without the tar.
- Stress. Nicotine is nicotine — a proper hit from a well-matched vape beats white-knuckling it.
- Alcohol. Be honest with yourself. If Friday nights are your weak spot, keep the vape in your pocket, not the glovebox.
A Quick Word on the Law
Everything we stock is fully TPD-compliant: 10ml bottles, 20mg maximum nicotine strength, child-resistant packaging. If you're buying from overseas marketplaces, be wary — we've written before about the risks of dodgy imports.
Your October, Sorted
Stoptober isn't about being perfect for 31 days — it's about not going back to cigarettes. If you've got a device that suits you, a nicotine strength that actually curbs the cravings, and enough supplies to see you through, you've already done the hard part.
