Why Every Big Bottle of E-Liquid Is Secretly Missing Something

The first time most of us order a shortfill, there's a moment of quiet confusion. You've bought 100ml of e-liquid, the parcel arrives, and the bottle is — what, three-quarters full? Four-fifths? Has the courier had a shake of it in transit?

Nothing's wrong. In fact, that deliberate gap at the top is the entire point, and it's the reason shortfills have quietly become the default way UK vapers buy their juice.

The Two-Millilitre Problem, Revisited

UK rules cap tanks and pods at 2ml, and they cap nicotine-containing e-liquid bottles at 10ml. That's the TPD in action, and it applies across the whole of Britain — no exceptions for Scotland, Wales or anywhere else.

But here's the clever bit: a bottle containing zero nicotine isn't bound by that 10ml ceiling. So manufacturers fill a big 100ml bottle only about 80% of the way, leaving room for you to pour in your own nicotine — usually as a 10ml "nic shot" — and mix it yourself at home.

It's a workaround that's completely legal, and it's why the format won. One bottle, one shot, done.

The Maths Isn't Scary, Promise

Right, let's do the arithmetic once so you never have to think about it again.

A standard nic shot is 10ml at 18mg/ml. If you pour that into a 100ml shortfill (which holds roughly 80ml of juice), you end up with 90ml of liquid containing 180mg of nicotine in total. Divide one by the other and you land at about 2mg/ml — a nice gentle strength, perfect if you've cut down or prefer light vaping.

Want 3mg? Two 18mg shots into the same bottle gets you there. Running a pod kit on nic salts and after something stronger? Shortfills honestly aren't your format — that's what 10ml salts are for.

The quick cheat sheet:

That last one trips people up: smaller bottle, same shot, stronger result. The shot doesn't care how much juice it's joining.

Shake It Like You Mean It

One thing nobody tells beginners: freshly mixed shortfills taste a bit flat. The nicotine needs to actually blend in, and that takes a proper vigorous shake — thirty seconds minimum, then give it another go ten minutes later.

If you can bear to wait, leaving the bottle overnight (or a few days, for dessert and custard flavours especially) makes a noticeable difference. Vapers call it "steeping", and while it sounds precious, it's really just letting the flavours settle.

So Which Bottle Size Is Actually Best Value?

Here's where the shortfill format earns its keep. Work it out per millilitre and the pattern is consistent across most UK shops:

Even after you add the cost of a nic shot — a couple of quid, tops — the big bottles win comfortably. The trade-off is commitment: a 100ml bottle is a lot of one flavour. If you're the sort who falls out of love with a juice by Thursday, buy the 50ml first.

Your First Shortfill Order, Step by Step

  1. Pick your flavour — check the VG/PG ratio on the listing. 70/30 blends suit sub-ohm kits; if you're on a basic pen-style device, look for higher PG.
  2. Add a nic shot — most product pages prompt you. 18mg freebase is the usual choice.
  3. Unbox and unscrew — the bottle has a childproof cap and a nozzle under it. Pop both off.
  4. Pour the shot in slowly — no rushing, no spillage. Overfilling the bottle is the classic rookie error.
  5. Cap, shake, wait — then vape as normal.

That's genuinely all there is to it. Once you've done it once, the whole 10ml-bottle era of your vaping life will feel like a distant, expensive memory.

One last note: keep your nic shots away from kids and pets, and wash your hands if you spill any. Concentrated nicotine is nothing to be casual about, even in 10ml quantities.

The Bottom Line

Shortfills exist because of a regulation, but they've thrived because they happen to be cheaper, less wasteful and more flexible than the alternative. Master the one bit of maths, learn to give the bottle a proper shake, and you'll wonder why you ever paid per-10ml prices.
